Unlike its inspiration, you can’t always rely on a fixed team in Palworld. Your five Pals need to be chosen carefully to keep a solid balance. Palworld isn’t only about fighting, so your team should include Pals for other tasks as well. But how do you put together your optimal team? That’s exactly what we’re covering today so you’re prepared for any situation. The better you understand your Pals and their abilities, the easier it is to build the perfect combo. And remember, you can stay flexible and use more than just five of your Pals.

Set Palworld team goals: Combat, exploration, gathering, training, capturing

Palworld team building and goals for combat, exploration, and gathering

First, understand that you won’t have just one team in Palworld—you should rotate different Pals in. Every little monster has its own strengths you can use for different purposes. Sure, you’ll have a few Pals that are almost always worth bringing, but sometimes you need to leave your strongest behind and fill your team with other creatures to tackle a specific task.

There are also some Pals that aren’t suited for teams at all and prefer to work at your base. Not every Pal is meant to fight at your side. Some simply prefer working or gathering important resources back home.

You’ll build teams for the following purposes:

  • Combat: Straightforward—bring your best Pals. But it’s not only about raw power; tactics matter, too. Know what you’re fighting.
  • Exploration: When discovering new areas, you need a diverse team to cover all contingencies. Your mobility is crucial, too.
  • Gathering: Sometimes you just want to farm resources, which calls for different Pals. Some boost your yield.
  • Training: In some cases you’ll bring underpowered Pals along to support them and level them up, or take them to earlier zones to train.
  • Capturing: Finally, there are special teams for catching new Pals. This nets you EXP and rare Pals. Certain abilities can help here, including those from Yakumo.

Mobility and mounts in Palworld: Riding, flying, swimming, gliding

Palworld mounts for mobility: riding, flying, swimming, and gliding

At least one slot in your five-Pal team will almost always be taken by a mount. You can run on your own two feet, but that’s inefficient in the long run. Plenty of Pals make you far more mobile. You should almost always bring one, no matter what your team’s goal is.

Which Pals you choose is up to you. Broadly, Pals let you ride, fly, swim, and glide. For your first few hours, rideable mounts are your best choice—we already have a guide (Palworld Mounts: Best Mounts for Early, Mid & Late Game) . In the late game, flying Pals are definitely superior (Palworld Flying Mounts: Best Mounts for Early, Mid, and Late Game) . Gliders can be important as well, and swimming Pals are perfect for treasure hunting or fishing.

It also pays to consider whether these mounts offer other abilities you can use. Are they strong in combat? Do they work well back at your base? Factor these into your choice of mount.

Make the most of Partner Skills: Synergies and builds

Palworld Partner Skills and synergies in team building

To pick the right Pals for your team, look at their Partner Skills. These are set per species and can serve as a foundation for team building. We can’t list them all here, but you should read them and use them correctly. Find more in our guide (Palworld Guide: The 15 best Partner Skills for your Pals) .

These Partner Skills are solid cornerstones for teams:

  • Daedream: When the player attacks, Daedream also launches an attack.
  • Gobfin: Boosts the player’s attack and also fires a Water attack when you attack. You can use up to four in one team.
  • Beegarde + Elizabee: One Elizabee supported by four Beegarde creates a unique combo, as Beegarde empowers Elizabee in battle.
  • Sweepa + Swee: Four Swee plus one Sweepa is another interesting combo—these Pals support each other in combat.

These abilities aren’t only for combat. Some drop more items, increase your mobility, buff elements, or highlight specific objects on the map or in the environment.

Leverage type advantages in combat

If you’re preparing for a specific fight, you should know your opponent’s weaknesses. Then you can assemble a team that hits exactly where it hurts. Use strong type matchups to your advantage to beat tough bosses more easily.

Other factors matter, too. For example, attacks matching a Pal’s type are 20% more effective. You can also lean on strong Partner Skills that boost elements. Some abilities even convert the player’s attacks to an element, which is perfect for support.

Passive Skills: The best traits for your team

Lastly, Passive Skills are crucial when choosing Pals for your team. Early on that’s not too important, but the further you progress, the more you should pay attention to these skills. They work similarly to Partner Skills, but they’re not strictly tied to a species (though some are exclusive).

Passive Skills can improve:

  • Attack and defense
  • Speed
  • Work suitability
  • Elemental strength
  • Stamina
  • Night activity
  • … and many others

If you want a detailed breakdown of Passive Skills, check out our guide (Palworld Guide: Best Passive Skills, Breeding, and Surgery Table) . You can reroll, assign, and actively target these traits.

Conclusion: Always pick the best five Pals for the situation

A team in Palworld is about far more than just your five strongest Pals. Build specifically for your current goal, because with different abilities and use cases, every Pal is unique. Some excel at mobility, others are great for gathering items. Of course, some are purely for combat, while others are better put to work at your base.
